University Professor

of

Intestinal Microbiology

(full time, limited to a period of 5 years) is to be filled.

The Department of Microbiology and Ecosystem Science, led by Univ.-Prof. Dr. Michael Wagner at the University of Vienna´s Research Network Chemistry Meets Microbiology (a joint initiative of the Faculties of Chemistry and Life Science) is a creative and ambitious team that conducts internationally leading research in the field of microbial ecology. We are interested in strengthening our research capacity in the area of Intestinal Microbiology.

Applicants for the professorship Intestinal Microbiology shall be internationally recognized for their excellence in research and teaching. In particular, successful candidates should have outstanding scientific activities in the development and application of sequencing-based as well as function-based tools (isotope probing methods) and modeling approaches for the analyses of intestinal microbiomes. We expect an innovative research concept in the field of intestinal microbiology as well as an active involvement in teaching in the fields of microbial ecology and microbiology at the bachelor and master level. Third-party funding (e.g. high-level grants) is desired.

Successful candidates should have the following qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree/PhD and post-doctoral experience at a university or other research institution
  • Habilitation (venia docendi) in a subject field relevant to this position or an internationally accepted equivalent qualification is desirable
  • Outstanding achievements in research, excellent publication record, international reputation
  • Experience in designing, procuring and managing large research projects, as well as the willingness and ability to lead research groups
  • Enthusiasm for excellent teaching, teaching experience at universities as well as the ability and willingness to teach students in all phases of their studies (bachelor's, master's, or doctoral level), to supervise academic theses and to promoting young academic colleagues

The University of Vienna expects the successful candidate to acquire, within three years, proficiency in German sufficient for teaching in bachelor’s programmes and for participation in university committees. In addition, the University of Vienna expects the successful candidate to be prepared to take over responsibility on the organisational level of the Faculties and the University, if necessary.
